I was born in Kaiping, China. Most of the time I speak Cantonese. I have been here for 50 years and I am now 89 years old. My father came first, then our family immigrated. I have two sons and one daughter, they were born in Hong Kong. My youngest daughter was born in the United States. All of my kids came to the United States. I have a brother in the United States, he came with my father. I worked as a seamstress, as a waitress, and at a bank. I worked at the Bank of America near the JFK subway station.

Migration story: Jen's grandparents' grandparents came from Ireland after the famine there. They settled in the midwest, and farmed. Her paternal grandmother, Lois O'Brien Breen, grew up very happy in Illinois, but never spoke much of her Irish roots, although Ireland was a source of pride and fascination to the later generations. On Jen's mother's side, her grandmother's father, Fred Allman, came from England, and married an Anglo American, Hazel Griffies.

Josh grew up in the South End and is a lifelong Boston resident. “My heritage is 1/2 old time yankee on my dad’s side (early settlers of Hopkinton, Ma and newport RI). The other 1/2 is Swedish immigrants from Minnesota (my great grandfather was a doctor in Sweden and said “All those Swedes are going to need a doctor in America” - but in Swedish). Both of my parents were architects (my dad was one of the designers of Boston City Hall and my mom designed numerous houses in and around the city). I grew up in a wonderful crazy quilt of a neighborhood that was the South End in the 1960’s and 70’s. My mother’s side is mostly eastern European Jewish through Chicago and the great socialist mecca of Milwaukee.”

Chinatown connection: Josh grew up in the South End and has long enjoyed visiting Chinatown for the great food and markets as well as connecting with friends of his parents both architectural and political (Tunny Lee an architect at MIT and Frank Chin and Harry Dow, business folks and activists). Migration story: My parents met and married in the States. My mother came from Hong Kong, my father from mainland China. So they had two pretty different paths. My mother’s family, her parents and her sister all ended up in the U.S., while my father was the only one in his village and region who came.

Migration story: I am a second-generation American. My father and his family emigrated from Austria to the U.S. in 1939. They were Jewish and had to leave in order to escape the Nazi persecution and extermination of Jews during World War II. My mother was also a Jewish refugee from that time, but from Germany. Her family left Berlin in 1934 and came to the U.S. in 1941.

Chinatown connection: I volunteer as an English tutor at Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, also my wife is a Chinese Malaysian immigrant and is on the board of South Cove Community Health Center.

Why: This is an Indian song for children, with lyrics in our (state) language of Gujarati. It's the only song we know in our native language of Gujarati, and it has been precious to be able to pass that onto our daughter. We didn't know this song as children; it was a gift to us from my husband's paternal uncle and aunt, who live in North Carolina and taught it to our daughter during a holiday visit. It speaks to the occasional, but very real loneliness of childhood and the eagerness to connect with someone or something you've met even briefly. It also shows us the capacity for music to create an impromptu sense of community, family, and friendship and to close the geographic and generational gaps between us. For our elders, the song has been an affirmation that the language of their childhoods is still very much with us.

Migration story: My husband and I are both first generation Gujarati Americans whose parents immigrated from India in the 1970's.

Chinatown connection: Our family visited Chinatown for the first time to see Shaw Pong perform at the Pao Arts Center, as our daughter has been really drawn to the violin for the past year, and we thought it would be exciting for her to attend a live performance. When we returned to the Pao Arts Center four months later for the Live Band Karaoke, it didn't matter that we were one of few in the room who couldn't follow the Chinese lyrics and sing along. We could still hear embodied in their voices the singers' nostalgia for their childhood homes, how dearly they missed their loved ones and the lives they had left behind, and how much it was at once a struggle and a joy to be given this chance to return home, in communion with a sympathetic audience.

Migration Story: Sebastian was born here in Boston in 2014, and holds both American and Canadian citizenship and culture. His father is from New Jersey, having moved here in 2000 for his college studies, and staying for work. His father’s family is mostly Italian American, his great-great and great-great-great grandparents having moved to New Jersey (via boat through Ellis Island) from Cosenza, Calabria and Avellino, Campania (near Naples) in Italy around 1900.

Sebastian’s mother grew up in Montréal, Canada and moved to Boston after university in 2001 for work, as the economy back home was quite poor at that time. His maternal grandmother is of Irish Canadian and Irish American descent, her ancestors having moved to Prince Edward Island and Massachusetts from Ireland and England in the mid-to-late 1800s, while his maternal grandfather is 12th generation Québécois (French-Canadian of Québec), his ancestors being among the early French settlers of New France. All of his ancestors came to North America seeking economic opportunity, some also escaping famine.
